Carson opened his eyes and stared at the ceiling. It took a second for his mind to kick in and realize what he was hearing. Half flipping over, Carson dove for the ringing phone on the table next to the bed.
Swiping at the image of a pulsating green button gave Carson a second to calm his racing heart and catch his breath. All calmness went out the window when he actually looked at the screen and saw Isaiah’s name.
“Hello.” Carson was proud of how in control he sounded.
Isaiah’s rich, deep voice answered, “Good morning, baby.
“Hi.” Carson winced at his total dweebness. Could he sound any more stupid?
“I know it’s early, but we’re just about to leave for breakfast.” Isaiah sounded so good, and Carson missed him. “The climb we’re going on should take most of the day. I’m thinking we won’t be home till later this evening.”
“Okay.” Carson rolled his eyes. Man, he sure was holding up his end of the conversation….not.
“If you need to, call Dorian.” The worry staining Isaiah’s word bothered Carson.
“I’ll be fine,” Carson assured him. He loved how confident that sentence had sounded.
There was a slight pause before Isaiah said, “You seem different. Did something happen?”
Carson froze. He did feel different. Now that Isaiah had said something, Carson realized that yesterday’s visit from Tolliver and his confrontation with Jimmy had eased some of the knots twisting his insides into mush.
“Tolliver came and talked to me. He’s nice,” Carson admitted. “Last night I went for a swim, and Jimmy came out by the pool to talk to me.”
“Baby, should I find a way home right now?” There was a sense of urgency in Isaiah’s trepid voice. “I won’t have Jimmy upsetting you with that mouth of his.”
“The discussion went well, Isaiah,” Carson confided. He understood Isaiah’s protectiveness and wanted to reassure him. “It cleared a lot of things up.”
“Are you sure?” Isaiah asked. In the background, Carson heard someone call Isaiah’s name.
“I’m fine.” For the first time in a long time, Carson meant that statement and further exemplified his newfound confidence by saying, “Have fun and I’ll see you tonight.”
“Um, sure. That sounds good.”
Carson could almost see the frown on Isaiah’s face. Instead of his heart seizing in fear, a smile almost formed on his lips. It had been a long time since he had even wanted to smile.
“Bye. Be safe,” Carson said.
“Bye, baby.”
How Carson loved it when Isaiah called him baby.
